Being a lesbian is not specifically about sex; it can refer to a woman who is romantically attracted to other women, in addition to referring to a woman who is sexually attracted to other ladies. The term lesbian started to be used to differentiate women with a shared sexual orientation in the 20th century. It is a sexual orientation, in the same way that being straight, bisexual or pansexual are.
